Ryder Cup star Robert MacIntyre brutally taunts US team with cheeky caddie reminder | Golf | Sport

European Ryder Cup star Robert MacIntyre cheekily teased his US rivals at the Valspar Championship in Florida by marking his caddie’s bib with the score from the win in Rome.

The Scottish golfer, who scored two-and-a-half-points without losing a match at the Marco Simone Country Club in September on his debut, made the most of a quirk of the tournament that lets players pick their own words for their caddie’s outfit.

He chose EUR 16.5 11.5 USA, reminding everyone of America’s defeat to Luke Donald’s team in Rome. This was on Mike Burrows’ bib, who wasn’t MacIntyre’s caddie at the Ryder Cup but teamed up a month later.

MacIntyre’s decision got mixed reactions. Ryder Cup Europe posted: “He’s only gone and done it. We approve.” However, the USA team said: “Never too soon to start thinking about Bethpage in 2025.”

Meanwhile, the official PGA Tour account simply said: “Too soon?” Sadly, during his opening round at the Valspar Championship, the 27-year-old couldn’t find the form he had in Italy, scoring just two birdies and a bogey in a one-under opening round, leaving him six behind leader Kevin Streelman.

His two American playing partners, Kevin Roy and Chandler Phillips, both shot better than him, recording six under and three under respectively.

MacIntyre is playing in his ninth PGA Tour event this season, but he’s had a tough time of it. He has fallen short of the cut in half of his previous tournaments, including last week’s Players Championship.
