Rory McIlroy rates Masters chances after spotting important change | Golf | Sport

Rory McIlroy thinks he has a good chance of winning The Masters this year. He’s been playing well in major tournaments recently and finally feels ready to win at Augusta National.

The Masters is the first major of the 2024 season. But McIlroy hasn’t been playing his very best golf so far on the PGA Tour.

He started the season well with a second-place finish in Dubai and then won the next tournament. But since then, his form has dipped. In his last five tournaments on the PGA Tour, his best result was 19th place at The Players Championship last month.

As The Masters gets closer, lots of fans are watching McIlroy. The Northern Irishman and is trying to win all four major tournaments in his career, with the iconic Green Jacket all that he is missing.

McIlroy recently played at Augusta to prepare for the upcoming tournament. And he is feeling positive regarding his chances, considering his recent form in Majors a positive change after finding more consistency in top events.

McIlroy said: “I feel good. My major play has definitely improved a bit over the last few years. Seven of the last eight I’ve finished in the top 10 and I’ve had a couple of really good chances in there as well. It’s getting close.

“I had a really good try at St. Andrews [2022 Open], I didn’t quite get it done there. I also had a really good chance at LACC [2023 US Open] and didn’t quite get it done there. I’m confident. I feel like my game is more well-equipped to contend in Major championships more consistently.”

McIlroy reflected on his past performances and his growth, stating: “Yes I’ve won major championships in my career, and I’ve won them by a large margin, but I feel like my performances in majors used to be a little volatile, whereas now they are a little more consistent. I feel good about that and we’ve got four really good venues for the majors this year and I’m excited for that as well.”

However, Talor Gooch, the LIV Golf individual champion, thinks if McIlroy wins this year, people might not see it as a full victory. Gooch, who won’t be playing at Augusta, recently suggested a win for McIlroy or any player would have an asterisk because some players were left out.

“If Rory Mcllroy goes and completes his Grand Slam without some of the best players in the world, there’s just going to be an asterisk,” Gooch commented back in February. “It’s just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there.”

McIlroy is in action at the Valero Texas Open this week, using the event as a warm-up ahead of The Masters. The 2024 Masters will run from 11-14 April.
